Serapio’s Adjustment to Emmanuel Macron’s Lot of Spirit

When Emmanuel Macron won the French presidential election in 2017, there was some consternation among Zodiacal Releasing enthusiasts that Macron’s victory did not appear to be indicated by his Zodiacal Releasing from the Lot of Spirit. This is because angular Zodiacal Releasing periods are correlated with “peaks” in one’s career, and one would expect that such a peak as being elected to a national office would be clearly reflected, and yet Macron’s releasing revealed none. In fact, he was in a distinctly negative period in his releasing which did not appear to match the corresponding events. I would like to introduce the possibility that according to certain caveats made by the ancient Hellenistic astrologers Serapio and Vettius Valens, we might not have been looking at the right Lot.

I have previously written about the precedent set by Hellenistic astrologers Serapio and Vettius Valens that the interpretive boundaries between the Lots of Fortune and Spirit are semi-permeable, and that there in fact exist specific criteria for when we might consider one of the Lots to be dominant or if they in fact switch places from their default positions. When we apply these criteria to Emmanuel Macron’s chart, we can see how his Zodiacal Releasing actually does describe his fortunate election as the President of France if we release from the right Lot.

Basic Principles of Qualitative Interpretation of ZR Periods Applied to Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron was born at 10:40 am on December 21st 1977 in Amiens, France. His birth data has a Rodden Rating of AA. While the birth minute does occur close to a commonly rounded time, it is not nearly as commonly rounded as birth times on the hour, half-hour or quarter-hour, so it appears to be mostly trustworthy. Here is his chart in the tropical zodiac with whole sign houses.

It needs to be established why the basic default principles of this technique do not appear to match his life, work and career. To do that one must understand some of the basic principles underlying the qualitative interpretation of Zodiacal Releasing periods.

To interpret the quality of a given period, one must consider whether and how benefics or malefics testify to the sign, as well as the condition of the ruler, as well as its relationship to the Lot of Fortune. Relative to Fortune, the cadent places tend to correspond with less consequential actions, the angular places correspond with peaks or initiations of actions and the succedent places correspond with completions and consequences of actions. Sometimes we can also see incidentally consequential periods where the natal angles fall, including the Ascendant, MC, Descendant and IC.

When releasing from the Lot of Spirit, one would expect the discernible peaks of his career to correspond with times when releasing from the Lot of Spirit is in the angles to Fortune or to the natal angles, and periods of success and renown should correlate with periods that are ruled by and/or angular to benefics rather than malefics. Other important periods can involve Loosings of the Bond as well as encountering the ruler of a period within a given subperiod.

Ranking Macron’s Planets and Signs

Because the periods of Zodiacal Releasing are defined by each sign and its ruler, it is important to be able to identify the best, worst and middling signs in a given chart because these will reflect positive, negative or middling periods in one’s life. Each sign in Macron’s chart can be generally ranked from the most subjectively positive/supportive to the most subjectively negative/unsupportive based on the condition of each of his planets and the testimonies received by each sign.

Jupiter is the most positive planet in his chart, being the benefic of the sect, angular in the whole sign 7th, in the sign of its own exaltation and its ruler is also in exaltation. It also rules 2 of his Fortune angles, and is also the ruler of his Sun, Mercury, Venus and Neptune. It is also the secondary trigon lord of his sect light. It is in aversion to the contrary to sect malefic. The only counts against Jupiter is that it is retrograde and beneath the horizon in a day chart. This is a conspicuously powerful Jupiter. Accordingly, the most fortunate signs by zodiacal releasing would include Cancer, the sign Jupiter is present in, as well as Pisces and Sagittarius. Pisces and Sagittarius would be slightly less benefic due to the hard aspects they receive from Saturn, and their cadency relative to the Ascendant, but still good nonetheless.

Venus is the next most positive planet in his chart, being the benefic contrary to sect. It is cadent in the whole sign 12th, and ruled by the dignified Jupiter. It is present on a Fortune angle and rules his dignified Moon. The counts against Venus include that it is contrary to sect, combust by the Sun, in a bad and cadent house in the natal 12th whole sign house, above the horizon in a day chart. Libra is the more positive sign due to being the natal angular 10th whole sign house and a good house relative to Fortune, and in having the dignified Jupiter in superior position to the sign. Taurus would be the less positive sign due to the contrary to sect Mars being in inferior position to the sign, but still not bad being in a good house relative to the Ascendant and Fortune.

The Moon is also quite positive in Macron’s chart. It is the light contrary to sect and it is comfortable beneath the horizon. It is in the sign of its exaltation, and a good house relative to the Ascendant and Fortune. It could be considered incidentally angular due to the presence of the IC in Taurus. The main count against the Moon is that it is square Mars by sign, but it is at least in superior position to the contrary to sect malefic. Additionally, the sign it rules contains Jupiter, the benefic of the sect and is angular due to the presence of the Descendant.

The Sun is the next most positive celestial body. It is the light of the sect, it is its own trigon lord, ruled by the benefic dignified Jupiter and angular relative to Fortune. However, it is cadent relative to the natal angles, in the 12th whole sign house, a bad house. It also rules the malefic contrary to sect, Mars in Leo.

Saturn is less positive but still constructive as the malefic of the sect. It is also a trigon lord of the sect light, ruler of the Ascendant, placed on a Fortune angle and in a good house relative to the Ascendant. It is unfortunately retrograde but otherwise conducive to business. It is thankfully in aversion to Mars in Leo. Capricorn is the most fortunate of Saturn’s signs in the chart because it is in opposition to the benefic of the sect, the highly dignified Jupiter in Cancer, and it is angularized by the Ascendant in Capricorn, and it is in aversion to Mars in Leo. The sign Saturn is in, Virgo, is not too bad due to being angular to Fortune and being in aversion to Mars in Leo. Aquarius is the more difficult of Saturn’s signs due to being in opposition to Mars in Leo.

Mercury presents a more mixed picture. It is technically contrary to sect as it is just barely setting behind the Sun and is not yet close enough to the Sun to be considered in cazimi, so it is combust, and retrograde to boot. It is in the sign of its exile, and it’s in the worst house natally, the 12th whole sign house. While this Mercury is in poor condition, it has important roles in the chart as the ruler of the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit, two Fortune angles, as well as Saturn. While Virgo contains Saturn, it receives more benefic testimonies than Gemini and is better positioned natally and by Fortune.

Mars is the least positive planet in Macron’s chart. It is the malefic contrary to sect, uncomfortable above the horizon in a day chart, retrograde in a bad house relative to the natal angles, the 8th whole sign house, and cadent relative to Fortune. Leo is probably the less worse sign of Mars because it is at least ruled by the Sun. Scorpio is the worst sign in Macron’s chart because it is ruled by Mars and because Mars is the contrary to sect malefic in superior position to the sign. Scorpio is angularized to some degree because of the presence of Scorpio.

We can use these considerations to rank these signs from most benefic to least benefic. Essentially the better houses and signs are angular places relative to Fortune and/or natal angles where the benefics are ruling or angular to the sign, especially Jupiter in a day chart, while in aversion to malefics and where planets in dignity are placed or ruling. The least fortunate houses and signs are cadent or bad places relative to Fortune and/or natal angles where the malefics are ruling or angular to the sign, especially Mars in a day chart, while in aversion to benefics and where planets without dignity are placed or ruling.

Why Macron’s Zodiacal Releasing from the Lot of Spirit Doesn’t Appear to Match Expectations

Let’s apply some of these observations to the main sequence under which Macron won the election based on the default position of his Lot of Spirit in Virgo.

He was in a 15-year Scorpio L1 period, which is ranked last on the list as the least positive period possible in his chart. If we knew nothing of the person who had this chart, one would probably conclude that this would be one of the most challenging periods in someone’s life, full of unsurmountable frustrations, times when one is motivated to act in ways that aren’t in one’s own interest. This time period has instead been nothing but an upward trajectory for Macron, becoming a millionaire in business and achieving friendships with highly powered people and achieving trusted positions in government. In short, a Scorpio major period in Macron’s chart is the least likely sign one would expect a presidential victory to occur under. The prominence of the period could potentially be explained by the MC in Scorpio but this would not change the general character of the times indicated by Mars.

On L2, he was in a 25-month Cancer period, which is ranked first on the list as the most positive period possible in his chart. This could represent a distinctly positive break from the surrounding context of the Scorpio L1 period, and was the main way that a victory was rationalized by astrologers at the time. Cancer is also incidentally angular due to the presence of the Descendant in the sign. But the broader context of the malefic Scorpio major period still defies explanation.

On L3, he was in a 50-day Virgo period, which one could consider to be a more mixed period despite its angularity to Fortune, because of Saturn’s presence in the sign while Venus testifies to the sign by inferior square. If we were to sum this up in one sentence, it would have to be that while it is quite active, it is also rather mixed rather than predominantly good or bad. The Loosing of the Bond to Pisces within the Virgo L3 period would be distinctly positive however, since it would be releasing to the Fortune 10th ruled by the best planet in the chart. If he was elected closer to the L4 Loosing of the Bond to Pisces, that might be something to consider, but he was not.

The first round of voting took place while he was on a 3.125-day long Scorpio L4 period. His victory in the preliminary election qualified him to enter the second round of voting. Given the analysis of his Scorpio L1 period, it is hard to say how one might have predicted he would do well when the election itself took place on a Scorpio L4 period. He won the second round during a 6.25-day long Aquarius L4 period, which isn’t much better as it is ruled by a malefic of the sect (Saturn) and opposite the malefic contrary to sect (Mars) and in aversion to the benefic of the sect (Jupiter). He was inaugurated president during a Taurus L4 period which is not bad, but not one of the best.

So in summary, he was elected on some of the worst days in an energetically mixed month in a great couple of years in the worst decade and a half of his life. Only one level was angular to Fortune, and two others were incidentally angular because of the natal angles. No rulers of the Lot of Spirit were encountered, and no rulers of the period were encountered on lower levels. There were no significant Loosings of the Bond on any level close to the election. There were no obvious correlations according to the basic fundamentals of the technique, and this is why astrologers generally strained to rationalize his victory through this method.

The Caveats About Lots by Serapio and Valens

If one entertains certain caveats about Lots introduced by Serapio and Valens, our understanding of Macron’s releasing could change dramatically.

“Many times Spirit (Daimon) becomes Fortune: for when the Light of the Sect is found in bounds of [a star] out of Sect; or, according to the masculine and feminine – that is, when the Sun is in a feminine sign by day, or when the Moon in a masculine sign by night; or when the Light of the Sect is not Eastern in the Hemisphere of the Sect; or when both Lights happen to be in the hemisphere under the Earth, and the other stars are found in an uncongenial condition because of the Light in overseeing position, that is, in the anteceding signs, then Fortune is taken in the direction of the following signs.”

In general, these criteria seem to be trying to determine whether the sect light is in accord enough with its own nature to support the topics represented by its associated Lot, the Lot of Spirit. When we apply this to Macron’s chart, we get the following results: Emmanuel Macron’s chart is a day time chart, so the Sun is the sect light. It is in a masculine sign, Sagittarius, and the Sun was eastern at the time of his birth. His Sun is not in superior position to other planets. The only criterion Macron’s chart meets is the very first one: His Sun is at 29 Sagittarius, in the Egyptian bounds of Mars, a contrary to sect planet in a day chart.

According to Serapio, this would mean his Lot of Spirit should become the Lot of Fortune. Accordingly, his Zodiacal Releasing from the Lot of Spirit should perhaps begin in Gemini, not Virgo. So his Lot of Fortune in Gemini would essentially be doing double duty, speaking for the topics of circumstance and bodily happenings as well as one’s will, mind, actions, etc.

It is true that we have no evidence that Serapio ever performed the technique of Zodiacal Releasing since Vettius Valens is our only source for it. So we don’t know that these considerations should be taken into account in the context of Zodiacal Releasing, though a good argument will be made in this article that it can and perhaps should. Even if we didn’t want to consider what Serapio said, Valens also has something relevant to say on this topic:

“Note that if the Lot of Fortune or its ruler are badly situated, the Lot of Daimon [Spirit] will distribute both the bodily and the active qualities. Likewise Fortune will make the distribution of both qualities if the Lot of Daimon [Spirit] or its ruler is unfavorably situated, and the same is true of the controls and the houserulerships.”

Emmanuel Macron has Fortune in Gemini and Spirit in Virgo both ruled by the same precariously placed Mercury in the cadent 12th house, retrograde and in the sign of its exile, so how should we decide which one predominates? Perhaps we’d have to consider the condition of his sect light (the Sun) versus his contrary to sect light (the Moon). His Sun is in Sagittarius, cadent and in a bad place, the 12th house. His Moon is in its exaltation of Taurus, succedent and in a good place, the 5th house. The Moon is seemingly in better condition than the Sun by sign, house and horizonal position, despite being the contrary to sect light. So this is another way we could approach this consideration, that the Lot of Fortune is better supported than the Lot of Spirit to represent the activities of one’s mind and actions, because his light contrary to sect (Moon in a day chart) is in better condition than his light of the sect in favor (Sun in a day chart).

Emmanuel Macron’s Serapio/Valens-adjusted Lot of Spirit in Gemini

When Macron’s Zodiacal Releasing begins in Gemini and is read as if it was his Zodiacal Releasing from the Lot of Spirit, the results are dramatically different.

Some might say that the results generated from this Lot should only make sense for matters of Fortune (one’s body, circumstances, the element of chance), but I think a good case can be made that this Lot seems to time out his career uncannily well, which is held to be the realm of the Lot of Spirit rather than Fortune.

Using the Serapio-adjusted Lot of Spirit in Gemini, Macron would be in a 25-year long Cancer L1 period at the time of his election, which is one of his most distinctly positive periods possible in his chart, due to the presence of his angular benefic of the sect in its exaltation, a trigon of the sect light and the ruler of his Fortune 10th house, etc. It is also a succedent house relative to Fortune, which brings affairs to completion and angular house relative to his natal angles, which provides incidental angularity. This would describe an active period of professional success and rising influence in this part of his life, rather than just the couple of good years indicated by the default Lot of Spirit in Virgo. This would match our expectations and the reality of what happened.

Remember that when releasing from his default Lot of Spirit in Virgo, he is in a Scorpio L1 period at the time of his election, one of the most distinctly negative periods possible in his chart, due to its rulership by Mars, a retrograde contrary to sect Mars in a superior square to the sign and from a bad house. So already on a very basic level, the Serapio-adjusted Lot of Spirit in Gemini would seem to be better descriptive of Macron’s career in that time.

One might also note that the L2 Loosing of the Bond to Capricorn on January 6th 2015 conveniently demarcates the point in his career where he went from being virtually unknown and never having held an elected office to running for President of France. It is these kind of qualitative descriptions of periods as well as the timing of turning points like Loosings of the Bond that can lead one to determine whether a Lot is describing one’s life accurately. But the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding is next.

Repetitions, Foreshadowing, Symmetry and Parallelism in Zodiacal Releasing from Macron’s Serapio-Adjusted Lot of Spirit in Gemini

One of the ways that we are able to make predictions and make sense of Zodiacal Releasing is the poetic/logical parallelism or symmetry that occurs between similar sequences of releasing. This is another way that we might be able to check whether Zodiacal Releasing is actually making any sense with a given chart. The following correlations only make sense when releasing from the Serapio-adjusted Lot of Spirit in Gemini. When releasing from the default Lot of Spirit in Virgo, these correlations are all lost.

According to this technique, the Capricorn period of 10/25/2005-1/13/2008 should in some sense be a foreshadowing of the Loosing of the Bond to Capricorn from 1/6/2015-3/26/2017. Often in the foreshadowing periods there is something that is started or attempted which does not come to pass until the Loosing of the Bond. While we don’t have exact dates for some of the events in the foreshadowing period, we do have some events which absolutely occurred during the L2 Capricorn period (10/25/2005-1/13/2008).

• In 2006, Macron was introduced to then-future French President François Hollande, who would be his boss beginning in 2010 through 2017. This was an extremely important connection because it would be through his work under Hollande that he would gain connections, experience and insider knowledge that would help him on his own run for President.
• Sometime in 2007, but before June 2007, Macron had applied to be a representative for Picardy in the legislative election in June of that year, but his application was denied.
• At the L3 Loosing of the Bond to Cancer within that Capricorn L2 period in the summer of 2007, he was appointed as a rapporteur for the then-newly elected President Sarkozy’s commission on economic growth, despite being in the opposing party.

If this 2005-2008 Capricorn L2 period was a foreshadowing of what was to come, then it was clearly going to revolve around work in politics, being a political candidate and seeing his profile raised in the political sphere. The L2 Loosing of the Bond to Capricorn (1/6/2015-3/26/17) provided a “payoff” to these foreshadowings, in some way reversing, magnifying or “completing” events suggested by the foreshadowing:

• On April 6th 2016, Macron launched his own political party En Marche, an attempt at a transpartisan political reform movement. He went from crossing the aisle working for a President of a different party during the foreshadowing to creating a political movement explicitly designed to cross the aisle of partisanship.
• In August 2016, Macron resigned from his job under President Hollande to directly challenge him for his own job. So he went from having a future French President as a boss to becoming a future French President against his own boss.
• He formally announced his presidential candidacy on November 16th 2016, forcing his own boss, the then-current President Hollande to announce he would not run again, on December 1st 2016. So he went from having his application to run as a local representative denied in the foreshadowing, to becoming an official candidate for national office.

L3 Capricorn Foreshadowing Period and Completion Period

When we look at the foreshadowings and repetition within the L2 Loosed Capricorn period (1/6/2015-3/26/17), we can see further symmetries.

In the same way that the Loosing of the Bond is foreshadowed by the foreshadowing period, in Capricorn and Aquarius periods, the subperiods manage to reach the sign of the upper period one more time after the Loosing of the Bond. So in a Capricorn L2 period, the initial Capricorn L3 period in some sense foreshadows the final Loosed Capricorn L3 period over 2 years later, which kind of wraps up what the period is about. This has been nicknamed the completion period.

Macron became known to many French people who had never heard of him before through an impressive television appearance he made on a political debate show “Des Paroles Et Des Actes” on March 12th 2015. In fact, this event itself was a completion period on L4, although we don’t know what happened in the initial L4 period, perhaps this was when the TV appearance was scheduled. In any case, the sequence for the television appearance was Cancer-(Capricorn)-Capricorn-(Capricorn). On that same date, he also gave his first political speech as a non-candidate, defending the “Macron Law” in front of skeptical voters at the Val-de-Marne (more on that in a bit).

The Loosings of the Bond to Cancer within this Loosed Capricorn L2 period seem to have centered around Macron’s break away from traditional partisan affiliations and his creation of a new political party. Literally, the “bonds” of his attachment to his party and the existing political order were “loosed”. As each Loosing of the Bond occurred on progressively higher levels, the associated events became more dramatic, like a tsunami wave picking up strength as it approaches the shore. In the Capricorn L3 period from 1/6/2015-3/14/2015, Macron was in the news a lot for being a mere Finance Minister. (Aquarius 2nd house, ruled by Saturn in the 9th house?) Through January 2015 he had been personally pushing a series of controversial economic reforms summed up as the “Macron Law”. He personally argued for it for 18 hours in front of parliament. The law was ultimately rejected by the legislators but was unilaterally pushed through by decree by the Prime Minister on February 17th 2015.

Despite the passage of the law, it was a hollow victory because it only passed essentially through executive order rather than popular approval. The process disillusioned Macron about the utility of the political status quo in France when it held back economic progress backed by majorities of the French public.

Bruised, Macron took away from this episode a number of lessons. While the law itself was passed just before the L4 Loosing of the Bond to Cancer, we can see how it probably coincided with Macron’s first real reckoning with the idea of creating a new party. The L3 Cancer Foreshadowing period furthered this theme.

While we don’t know the exact dates of when the secret En Marche meetings began, the earliest confirmed time was on a Saturday in October 2015, according to Sophie Pedder’s biography of Macron. It is possible then that the secret En Marche meetings coincided with the beginning L3 Cancer foreshadowing period, Cancer-(Capricorn)-Cancer-Cancer in mid-October 2015. This would seem to perfectly foreshadow the final event of the L3 Loosing of the Bond to Cancer.

On July 12th 2016, Macron held his first political rally for En Marche in the Latin quarter of Paris, under Cancer-(Capricorn)-(Cancer)-Capricorn. So the foreshadowing was the secret meetings planning this political movement and the Loosing of the Bond would be its public campaign debut. You can see the progression from legislative grudge to forming a new party to debuting the new party with each Loosing of the Bond to Cancer.

It is worth noting that in any given Virgo period, Macron will experience a Loosing of the Bond to Pisces, one of his most prominent and fortunate signs due to being the 10th sign from Fortune and that it is ruled by his in sect benefic Jupiter and in aversion to his contrary to sect malefic Mars. These events occurred in Leo L4 periods, the period right before the Loosing of the Bond to Pisces, his Fortune 10th on L4. These periods almost seem anticipatory of the Loosing of the Bond despite strictly occurring under Leo L4 periods.

We also see this exact same pattern emerge for the election itself and his ascent to the Presidency.

Saturn is the ruler of Aquarius, and he has his Saturn in Virgo, so we see again that when Virgo is reached on L4 within an Aquarius L3, this is when the pivotal events happened. So the Virgo L4 corresponded with his victory in the first round of voting, and the Loosed L4 Virgo period corresponded with his formal inauguration as President.

The 2nd round of voting which actually clinched his victory occurs under a Capricorn L4 but before the Loosing of the Bond to Leo. We might see this as positive because he narrowly avoided the election occurring on the Loosing of the Bond to one of his worst signs, since Leo contains his contrary to sect Mars. From the perspective of Zodiacal Releasing, he already had it in the bag when he won the 1st round under the first Virgo L4 period, because of its Loosed repetition at his inauguration.

It is precisely these kinds of correlations that Zodiacal Releasing tends to show, and these only appear for Macron when his Lot of Spirit is considered to begin releasing from Gemini  rather than Virgo. I admit though that I was a bit puzzled as to how or why he would have actually become President under a new Aquarius L2 period when it’s not that great because of the opposition to Mars, but it eventually made sense once we got to the L3 Loosing of the Bond to Leo.

We can see how damaging significant activations of his Mars in Leo can be. This might be showing more of the Fortune side of his releasing from Gemini, since he is not necessarily in total control of these following events. There was a Loosing of the Bond to Leo on L4 after Macron entered the Aquarius L2/L3 period, shortly after he was elected.

So we can see that the violent protests right after his election foreshadowed the emergence of the much larger and more problematic Yellow Vest protest movement, both indicated by his L4 and L3 Loosings of the Bond to Leo respectively, the sign containing his Mars. The first protests after his election concerned fears that his policies would hurt the working class. The Yellow Vest protests were spurred by Macron’s comments that a carbon tax would increase in the next year but also encapsulated general anger at Macron. So not only does the timing work out uncannily but it also closely tracks with what we would expect from Leo periods in Macron’s Zodiacal Releasing.

Unfortunately for Emmanuel Macron, if my analysis is correct that his Lot of Spirit should more properly be considered to release from Gemini, then the new 19-year Leo L1 period he will enter in April 2022 does not look good for the 2022 elections, should he run. Even if he somehow won, he would theoretically encounter resistance on a larger level than even the Yellow Vest protests, which seems hard to envision. The first round of voting will occur somewhere between April 8th – April 23rd 2022, and the final round of voting will occur sometime between April 22nd – May 6th 2022. Any way you slice it, Mars is likely to be significantly active in that time.

Conclusion

I hope this analysis proves that we should not necessarily take default Lot positions for granted, at least concerning Fortune and Spirit. There are many cases like Macron’s, where Zodiacal Releasing on the basis of the default Lot of Spirit grants undecipherable results, but taking all factors into consideration may help us look at certain Zodiacal Releasing periods in their proper context. Perhaps these caveats of Serapio and Valens should be taken more seriously and explored more thoroughly in one’s practice of Zodiacal Releasing.
